Jamaican track stars Briana Williams and Shashalee Forbes are poised to showcase their sprinting prowess in the women’s 60m event at the prestigious Millrose Games, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting scheduled for February 11 in New York.
Williams, a 2021 Olympic 4x100m gold medalist, and Forbes, who clinched the silver medal in the same event during the 2016 Olympics, will face formidable competition. Their opponents include Julien Alfred from St. Lucia, the second-fastest woman ever over the 60m distance.
Alfred garnered attention by winning the NCAA indoor title in 2023, setting a North American record with a blistering time of 6.94 seconds—only 0.02 seconds away from the long-standing world record. She also secured the NCAA indoor 200m title, clocking 22.01 seconds, which elevated her to the second position on the all-time list for world indoor 200m performances.
Alfred’s dominance
Alfred’s dominance continued outdoors, where she remained undefeated in the 100m from April to August. However, her sole setback of the year came during the World Championships final, where she finished fifth in the 100m but improved to fourth in the 200m event.
The star-studded field doesn’t stop there, as it features 2019 world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith from the UK, who holds British records for the 60m, 100m, and 200m, and boasts an impressive collection of eight global medals along with seven continental medals, including four gold.
Adding to the American representation, English Gardner, the 2016 Olympic 4x100m champion, returns to the event where she previously triumphed in 2019.
Completing the line-up of exceptional sprinters are World indoor bronze medalist Marybeth Sant-Price, the 2023 Millrose Games runner-up Tamari Davis, and NACAC silver medalist Celera Barnes, ensuring that the women’s 60m at the Millrose Games promises to be an electrifying and highly competitive affair.
