In just one year of competing at the NCAA level, Jaydon Hibbert has etched his name into the annals of collegiate track and field history.
The 19-year-old sophomore from the University of Arkansas made history by becoming the youngest recipient of the prestigious Bowerman Award, solidifying his status as the greatest collegiate jumper of all time.
Hibbert’s remarkable journey to greatness included an unbeaten streak in the Triple Jump at the NCAA level in 2023. He not only secured victory in every competition but also set new collegiate records, both indoors and outdoors.
The highlight of Hibbert’s season came at the SEC Outdoor Championships on May 13, where he leaped to a remarkable distance of 17.87 meters, establishing a new World U-20 record and earning a gold medal. He continued his winning streak by claiming top honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, following earlier victories at the SEC and NCAA Indoor Championships in February and March.
Profound impact
Travis Geopfert, the associate head coach at the University of Arkansas, emphasized the profound impact of Hibbert’s performances on the NCAA track and field landscape. He expressed, “His stamp on the history of NCAA Track & Field is already there in a very short period of time. That, we’re going to forever celebrate. His name is in the history books forever, and I’m excited for that to continue on the world stage as well.”
Chris Buckman, the head coach of Arkansas men’s track and field team, also shared his sentiments on Hibbert’s decision to turn professional. He stated, “We’re so proud of Jaydon and all he’s accomplished here as a Razorback in such a short period of time. We’re just really, really happy that he’s able to take this next step and go to the next level. It really gives us a sense of satisfaction and pride. I wish him nothing but the best.”
Jaydon Hibbert has chosen to embark on his professional career while continuing his collegiate education at Arkansas. He will receive guidance and training under the watchful eye of Coach Geopfert, who is eager to witness Hibbert’s potential at the highest level of competition.
Excitement for Hibbert’s future
Geopfert expressed his excitement for Hibbert’s future, saying, “I’m super excited for him. It’s a great opportunity that he’s earned, and I’m really excited for the work that he’s put in already this year and how that’s going to pay off going forward. The experience that I’ve been fortunate to have working with a lot of professional athletes over the years, I’m excited for the setup we have here for ‘Hibby’ to make a smooth transition to the professional ranks.”
Looking ahead, Hibbert’s primary focus for the year will be on the outdoor season, according to Coach Geopfert. He anticipates that Hibbert’s increased strength and speed, combined with technical refinements, will yield impressive results. One specific area of improvement will be Hibbert’s approach to the board, where he will transition to a full run-up, potentially leading to even greater achievements.
Coach Geopfert also commended Hibbert for his decision to remain in school despite turning professional. “I’m really proud of him for staying grounded and staying in school. It’s a terrific opportunity, and I’m excited for what’s to come this year,” Geopfert remarked, highlighting Hibbert’s dedication to both his sport and his education.
