Former West Indies Test captain, Jason Holder, has clarified his decision to decline selection for the upcoming Test series in Australia, citing his strong desire to participate in the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year.
Holder, who has also captained the West Indies in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), highlighted the evolving nature of global cricket as a pivotal factor influencing players’ career choices, with increasing opportunities in franchise cricket to enhance their earnings.
The 32-year-old all-rounder was noticeably absent from the 15-man squad named for the Australian Test tour, with Cricket West Indies (CWI) indicating in a statement that Holder had “expressed a preference to explore T20 franchise opportunities in January.”
Holder, who boasts an impressive international record of 64 Test matches, 138 ODIs, and 59 Twenty20 Internationals, explained his decision during an interview with ESPNcricinfo. He emphasized the shifting landscape of the sport, characterized by the proliferation of T20 leagues worldwide, offering players various career paths.

According to Holder, “It all depends on what a player wants in terms of his career. It’s a profession, and there’s a massive window in terms of franchise cricket early in the year.” His primary motivation is to prioritize playing T20 cricket in preparation for the T20 World Cup and, simultaneously, to maximize his earnings.
Notably, Holder was excluded from the list of central contracts announced earlier this month by CWI. However, the board confirmed his availability for all West Indies T20 Internationals during the contract year.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 4-30 in the Caribbean and the United States, and Holder, who has been a regular feature in the T20 squad, expressed his eagerness to be part of this prestigious event, particularly because it will be played on home soil. He believes that West Indies has a strong chance of winning the tournament and wants to give himself the best opportunity to contribute to that success.
