Jamaica’s Mount Pleasant FA and Charlton Athletic forge exciting partnership for football development

Mount Pleasant Football Academy, the reigning champions of the Jamaica Premier League, and Charlton Athletic, an English League One club, have officially entered into a pioneering partnership known as the ‘Mountain to Valley Partnership.’

This collaboration aims to enhance the development of elite football players emerging from Charlton’s esteemed academy while providing talented young Caribbean footballers with a clear pathway to pursue professional careers in London.

The partnership, announced via a press release from Mount Pleasant FA and featured on Charlton Athletic’s official website, marks a significant step forward in the footballing world. It underscores the commitment of both organizations to fostering football talent in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and beyond.

As part of this strategic alliance, Charlton’s young players will participate in an annual youth tournament at Mount Pleasant’s campus, promoting cultural exchange and football development. Additionally, Mount Pleasant’s senior team will engage in an annual pre-season charity match at The Valley, Charlton’s home ground.

Long-term vision

The partnership’s long-term vision is to expand Charlton’s talent pool by harnessing the expertise, knowledge, and experience of Charlton’s academy. Notably, many of Charlton’s successful homegrown players over the past decades have had Jamaican origins, further highlighting the cultural connection and mutual benefit of this collaboration.

Jamaican international players Michael Hector and Karoy Anderson are currently part of Charlton’s roster, reinforcing the historical ties between Charlton and Jamaica.

Mount Pleasant FA owner Peter Gould expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, describing it as a symbol of mutual commitment to football talent development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. He emphasized that this collaboration would provide young athletes with opportunities to hone their skills beyond the region.

Paul Christie, the sporting director of Mount Pleasant FA, highlighted the academy’s unique blend of football and academics. He believes that partnering with Charlton, a renowned London club with a successful academy, will enhance Mount Pleasant’s appeal to top-tier talent.

Charlton Athletic’s academy, ranked eighth in England as of 2022, places significant importance on quality recruitment and talent identification. The historical success of recruiting talented local players has been a cornerstone of Charlton’s youth development achievements.
