Jamaican athlete Lamara Distin made history at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Championships held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, by setting a new national record in the women’s high jump.
Her remarkable feat not only secured her third consecutive SEC title but also established her as one of the standout performers of the event.
During the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Distin, a senior at Texas A&M University, soared to new heights by clearing a jump of 2.00 meters in the women’s high jump event. This impressive leap not only surpassed her previous national record of 1.97 meters set in 2023 but also solidified her status as a dominant force in collegiate athletics.
Distin’s journey to this historic moment began with her stellar performance at various high schools in Jamaica, including Rusea’s High School, Vere Technical High School, and Hydel High School, where she showcased her exceptional talent as a star athlete. At the SEC Indoor Championships, she demonstrated her prowess by clearing the opening six heights on her first attempt, ultimately securing her third-straight SEC indoor high jump title.
Distin raised the bar even higher
In a thrilling display of determination and skill, Distin raised the bar even higher, clearing the record-breaking mark of 2.00 meters on her third and final jump. This achievement not only earned her the victory but also etched her name in the annals of SEC history as only the second women’s athlete to win the indoor high jump title three times in a row.
Distin’s record-breaking performance also surpassed the all-time indoor collegiate record previously held by Akela Jones and Destinee Hooker and the outdoor collegiate record set by Brigetta Barrett in 2013.
Among the notable Jamaican athletes who excelled at the SEC meet was Romaine Beckford, who clinched Arkansas’s first men’s high jump title since 2016 with a jump of 2.25 meters.
Distin’s record-breaking achievement at the SEC Indoor Championships stands as a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. With her remarkable performance, she has not only etched her name in Jamaican athletics history but has also solidified her status as a rising star in collegiate track and field. As she continues to soar to new heights, Distin serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes both in Jamaica and around the world.
