Jamaican athletes Ackera Nugent, Corey Jones triumph at Arkansas Invitational

Jamaican athletes Ackera Nugent and Corey Jones demonstrated their exceptional abilities at the prestigious Arkansas Invitational, held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus.

Nugent emerged victorious in the women’s 60m dash, delivering a swift performance with a remarkable time of 7.35 seconds. Her outstanding sprint placed her just ahead of Jada Baylark from the United States, who finished closely behind with 7.36 seconds. Rosey Effiong, representing Arkansas, completed the race in 7.45 seconds.

In the earlier heats, Nugent had already asserted her dominance by being the fastest qualifier with a time of 7.38 seconds. Another Jamaican athlete, Joanne Reid, competing for Arkansas, showcased her speed as the third-fastest qualifier with a time of 7.52 seconds, ultimately finishing in 5th place with a time of 7.45 seconds.

Impressive throw of 17.28 meters

Jones, another standout Jamaican athlete, took center stage in the men’s shot put event, securing the top spot with an impressive throw of 17.28 meters. He showcased his strength and skill, leaving Desmond Fraizer from UT-Arlington in second place with a throw of 15.85 meters and Aidan Patton from Central Arkansas with a throw of 15.76 meters.

The men’s 60m dash featured Julian Forde of Louisiana Tech as the victor, completing the race in a swift 6.74 seconds. He outpaced Ibrahim Fuseini of Texas A&M-Commerce and Gabriel Torres of Little Rock, who finished in 6.75 seconds and 6.77 seconds, respectively.

The women’s 60m hurdles proved to be a closely contested event, with Great Britain’s Cindy Sember securing first place with a time of 8.06 seconds. She faced strong competition from Michelle Atherley of the United States and Destiny Huven of Arkansas.

Women’s 300m event

The women’s 300m event witnessed Mariana Shostak from Ukraine claiming victory with a time of 37.71 seconds. Jamie Sancho of Louisiana Tech emerged as the winner in the men’s 300m, clocking a time of 34.16 seconds, followed by Mohamed Soumare of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Rodney Heath Jr. of Louisiana Tech.

Within the field events of the Arkansas Invitational, Celeste Sela from Texas A&M-Commerce excelled in the women’s long jump, achieving a remarkable leap of 5.97 meters. In the men’s long jump, Jedidiah Udunna from UT-Rio Grande secured victory with a jump of 7.59 meters.

The women’s high jump saw Saara Hakanen from Oklahoma State claim the top spot, clearing 1.78 meters, narrowly surpassing A’riel Williams from Louisiana Tech.
