Isai Thorne, a 19-year-old former West Indies Under-19 pacer from Guyana, led the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Academy to a commanding innings and 134-run win over Emerging Ireland in a four-day, first-class match held in Antigua in a remarkable display of bowling prowess on Monday.
Thorne’s spellbinding performance saw him claim four crucial wickets for a mere eight runs in six overs, leaving Emerging Ireland in shambles as they were bowled out for just 62 runs in their second innings, just before lunch on the penultimate day of the contest at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop also played a pivotal role, securing two wickets for just five runs from 4.4 overs. Academy captain Nyeem Young contributed significantly, finishing with two wickets for 15 runs from six overs. Impressively, none of the visiting batsmen managed to reach the 20-run mark.
The final blow
The final blow came when Bishop dismissed Matthew Foster, caught at deep mid-wicket for four, while attempting an ill-advised slog-sweep. Emerging Ireland’s batting order crumbled under pressure, losing their last seven wickets for a mere 29 runs in just 93 balls.
This victory provides the CWI Academy with a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with the second match scheduled to commence next Saturday at the same venue.
Thorne, who did not feature in the preceding three one-day matches between the two sides, made a significant impact by striking with the second ball of the day. He bowled out the Irish captain, Stephen Doheny, without adding to his overnight score of 17.
An invaluable opportunity for emerging talent
Thorne followed up with two more wickets in his next over, dismissing Scott Macbeth and Gavin Hoey, who were both caught for minimal scores. Although he remained wicketless in his third over, Thorne bounced back to dismiss Fionn Hand for eight, caught at backward point off the leading edge. At this point, Emerging Ireland found themselves in dire straits at 45 for seven.
Despite Thorne’s dominance, the visitors managed to eke past the 50-run mark before Joshua Bishop claimed the wicket of Matthew Humphreys for seven. Pacer Johann Layne contributed to the onslaught by dismissing Morgan Toppin, who scored the only other double-digit figure in the innings, with 11 runs.
This series provides an invaluable opportunity for emerging talent within the West Indies pathway system to gain experience and playing time against counterparts from other cricket-playing nations. The CWI Academy squad mainly comprises players from the West Indies Academy program, some of whom have already gained first-class experience, while others have graduated from the Under-19 level with distinction.
