Inter Miami CF’s inaugural CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign concluded with a 3-1 defeat against C.F. Monterrey in the quarter-finals at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico. The loss ended their hopes of advancing further in the competition.
The match saw Inter Miami playing with Drake Callender in goal, supported by a defensive line-up consisting of Marcelo Weigandt, Tomás Avilés, Nicolás Freire, Noah Allen, and Jordi Alba. In midfield, Julian Gressel, Sergio Busquets, and Diego Gómez provided support, while Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez led the attack.
Despite a tightly contested first half, Monterrey took the lead in the 31st minute through Brandon Vazquez’s goal. Monterrey extended their lead with goals in the 58th and 64th minutes. Inter Miami managed to pull one back in the 85th minute with a header from Gómez, assisted by Messi.
Disappointment at the loss
Ultimately, Inter Miami’s efforts were not enough to overcome Monterrey’s lead, and they bowed out of their maiden CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign.
Head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino expressed disappointment at the loss, stating, “Today’s defeat takes away a hope we had, which was to be able to move forward in this competition.”
Inter Miami CF’s journey in the tournament began with a Round of 16 entry after winning the 2023 Leagues Cup. They secured their spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Nashville SC. Despite the loss, the team now looks ahead to resume MLS regular season action against Sporting Kansas City on April 13 at Arrowhead Stadium at 8:30 p.m. ET.
