The West Indies T20 squad has suffered a significant blow as explosive middle-order batsman Rovman Powell has been officially ruled out of the remaining matches in the ongoing T20 International series against Pakistan, following a wrist injury.
The 32-year-old power hitter, known for his fearless stroke play and on-field charisma, did not feature in the opening match at the Broward County Stadium on Thursday, where the West Indies fell short by 14 runs. It has since been confirmed that Powell will take no further part in the series.
Setback in St Kitts
Powell sustained the injury during a valiant attempt at a catch in the fourth T20I against Australia at Warner Park in St Kitts last Tuesday. The incident forced him to sit out the fifth and final match of that series, raising early concerns about his availability for the Pakistan fixtures.
Now, with medical assessments confirming the extent of the wrist damage, team officials have opted not to risk aggravating the injury further—effectively ruling him out of the two remaining games in Fort Lauderdale.
Key absences felt in opening loss
In addition to Powell’s absence, West Indies also went into the series opener against Pakistan without top-order stalwarts Brandon King, Evin Lewis, and Shimron Hetmyer. The depleted lineup fell short in their pursuit, allowing Pakistan to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match contest.
Their absence, particularly Powell’s, was keenly felt in the middle order where the West Indies lacked their usual firepower during key moments of the chase.
