ICC T20 World Cup boosts U.S. and West Indies by $1.66B

In a landmark revelation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 generated an astonishing US $1.66 billion in economic impact across the United States and the West Indies.

Held from June 1 to June 29, 2024, the month-long cricketing spectacle surpassed expectations, blending elite athleticism with massive economic returns.

The tournament unfolded across nine host locations, with three U.S. cities—Nassau County (New York), Grand Prairie (Dallas), and Lauderhill (Florida)—joining six Caribbean nations in showcasing world-class cricket and cultural vibrance: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Legacy built on infrastructure and investment

More than a tournament, the T20 World Cup became a driver of infrastructure development and tourism revitalization. A coordinated effort between the ICC, Cricket West Indies, and local governments led to significant stadium upgrades, transforming facilities into state-of-the-art venues equipped to host future global events. These enhancements mark a lasting legacy for cricket in both regions.

The United States, which hosted 16 matches, realized a financial windfall of US $618.4 million, a figure underscoring its growing importance in global cricket’s expansion strategy. But it was the Caribbean that reaped the lion’s share—over US $1 billion—with Barbados emerging as the economic champion, recording US $428 million in gains.

Barbados shines bright, USA impresses

Among Caribbean hosts, St. Vincent and the Grenadines secured US $224 million, and Saint Lucia followed closely with US $132 million. The combined impact across Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago amounted to US $259.6 million—a clear reflection of regional collaboration and cricket’s widespread appeal.

Barbados also became a fan-favorite, with 50% of visitors staying over five nights and contributing a notable US $22.9 million in food and beverage (F&B) expenditure. Meanwhile, the United States recorded US $52.9 million in F&B revenue, showcasing the domestic appetite for the sport and its corresponding tourism benefits.

Visibility beyond the pitch

While the economic figures are impressive, the global visibility generated by the tournament carried additional weight. Broadcast exposure, media coverage, and team branding brought the host nations into the international spotlight, generating an estimated US $92.5 million in media value.

This boost in profile is expected to yield dividends for years to come, as tourism boards and sporting authorities capitalize on the recognition and momentum built during the tournament.

A triumph for the ICC and host nations

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice lauded the tournament’s success, stating: “The T20 World Cup 2024 delivered an extraordinary economic boost, reinforcing the ICC’s role in fostering growth. Beyond financial gains, it positioned the USA and West Indies as world-class sports and tourism destinations.”

Indeed, the 2024 edition was not only a showcase of cricket’s dynamic format—it was a global platform that solidified new markets, attracted visitors by the thousands, and stimulated a level of investment that will echo long beyond the final ball.

As the dust settles and nations tally their gains, one truth stands clear: the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was not just a tournament—it was a transformation.
