GEORGETOWN, Guyana – As the countdown to the 2025 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) intensifies, the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) have announced strategic squad changes, aimed at fortifying their title ambitions after an untimely injury and early-season player unavailability.
The first match of the tournament looms on August 14, and the Warriors are already adjusting to unforeseen setbacks—starting with the loss of New Zealand star Glenn Phillips, who has been ruled out through injury.
Ben McDermott steps in: Power, precision, and proven form
In response, GAW have turned to Australian batting powerhouse Ben McDermott, a proven performer with a reputation for destructive stroke play. McDermott arrives fresh from the Hobart Hurricanes and a recent appearance in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSLT20), where he showcased his comfort in Caribbean conditions.
Armed with 2,782 runs in 99 Big Bash League (BBL) innings at a fearsome strike rate of 138.41, including a career-best 127, the right-hander adds immediate firepower to the Warriors’ top order.
Iftikhar Ahmed joins as temporary cover
In another adjustment, Pakistani all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has been drafted in as a temporary replacement for Hassan Khan, who is set to miss the first three matches of the campaign.
Iftikhar, no stranger to CPL fans, brings versatility and aggression to the side. He recently featured for the Rangpur Riders in the GSL and owns a career T20I strike rate of 130, highlighting his ability to shift momentum in the middle overs with both bat and ball.

With the CPL’s opening fixture fast approaching, the Guyana Amazon Warriors have assembled a well-balanced unit brimming with experience, youth, and international pedigree. Captain Imran Tahir will again marshal the side, with key roles expected from the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Shai Hope, and rising sensation Shamar Joseph.
