PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Trinidad and Tobago’s national football team has been granted a substantial financial lifeline as they intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
On Thursday, the government delivered an impressive TT$6.8 million to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), marking the first phase of a transformative investment in the Soca Warriors’ campaign.
The funds, totaling TT$6,792,353, were handed over to TTFA President Kieron Edwards by the dynamic Minister of Sport and Community Development, Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis. This critical contribution is part of a broader US$2 million pledge to be rolled out over two years, providing a solid financial foundation for the national team’s journey toward global football’s grandest stage.
A lifeline for ambition
“This government remains steadfast in its support for our athletes and their aspirations,” declared Minister Cudjoe-Lewis at the cheque presentation ceremony. The allocation will cover a range of essential needs, including coaches’ salaries, local and international training, friendly matches, airline travel, and team operations.
The funding arrives at a pivotal moment for the Dwight Yorke-led squad, as they gear up for a series of decisive qualifiers. The Soca Warriors began their 2026 campaign with a spirited 2-2 draw against Grenada in June at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, showcasing both promise and areas for growth.
Crucial matches loom
With the next phase of qualification on the horizon, the stakes are high. Trinidad and Tobago will host St. Kitts and Nevis on June 6, 2025, before traveling to face powerhouse Costa Rica on June 10. Victories in these matches would secure a spot in the third round of qualifiers, commencing in September 2025, and trigger the release of the next instalment of government funding.
“The team is determined to seize this opportunity and elevate Trinidad and Tobago football to new heights,” Edwards said, emphasizing the significance of sustained support from both the government and the community.
A promising year ahead
Before the June qualifiers, the Soca Warriors will step into competitive action in March 2025 with a high-stakes Gold Cup preliminary clash against Cuba. The home-and-away fixture will provide Yorke’s squad an opportunity to refine their tactics and build momentum.
With robust financial backing, a dedicated roster, and a legendary coach at the helm, the Soca Warriors are positioned to reignite national pride and make a resounding statement on the global stage.
