Fraser McConnell powers through adversity to snatch RallyX podium in Finland

In a gripping display of tenacity, resilience, and tactical mastery, Jamaica’s Fraser McConnell defied mechanical gremlins and fierce competition to secure a remarkable third-place finish at Round 7 of the RallyX Series, held at the storied KymiRing circuit in Finland.

The event, marking the first-ever Rallycross race at KymiRing, offered a level playing field for the entire 19-driver grid — and McConnell seized the opportunity despite early heartbreak.

Early troubles in qualifying mar Fraser’s start

McConnell’s weekend began with promise as he posted the third-fastest time in Free Practice, showcasing the potential of his OMSE-developed FC2-spec car against a fleet of superior-powered Supercars.

But fortune soured in Qualifying 1 (Q1). After a blistering launch from P3 to the lead by Turn 2, a broken toe link – sustained with barely any contact – forced an early and unexpected retirement just two corners later. The mechanical mishap dropped Fraser to the bottom of the standings.

“That early failure was frustrating,” McConnell admitted. “Especially because we were looking so strong right out of the gate.”

Undeterred, he rebounded in Q2, setting the third-fastest time and jumping to 11th overall. But his momentum stalled again in Q3, as overheating issues hampered performance mid-race, relegating him to 13th — one place outside the top 12 needed for the semi-finals.

Do-or-die Q4: McConnell delivers under pressure

With his tournament future hanging in the balance, McConnell delivered when it mattered most in Qualifying 4 (Q4). A measured and composed drive saw him leapfrog the competition and climb to ninth overall, sealing a place in the semi-finals with a P5 grid start.

From there, he unleashed his racing instincts. Starting from the back row in the semi-final, Fraser smartly dodged chaos in Turn 1 and opted for an early joker lap — gaining clear air and setting his sights on the front pack.

A thrilling nose-to-tail battle ensued with a more powerful Supercar, culminating in McConnell finishing just 0.007 seconds shy of second place.

“Missing second place by such a tight margin was a little disappointing,” he reflected.
“But it was great racing, and I am through to the Finals — which wasn’t expected based on how my race weekend was going.”

From back row to podium: Fraser clinches hard-fought 3rd in final

Lining up on the back row once again for the Final, McConnell displayed nerves of steel. He steered clear of early contact, skilfully maneuvered around track incidents, and emerged in second place after Turn 2. Though eventually passed by one of the dominant Supercars, he held firm to claim a remarkable third-place finish — a feat few saw coming after the challenges he had faced.

Notably, Fraser was the only driver in an FC2-spec car among the Supercar-heavy Final line-up — making his podium finish even more extraordinary.

“A podium finish is always great, but this one is even more special considering my issues in the qualifying session,” said McConnell.
“I am also extremely proud to be a part of the OMSE Team that is developing this FC2 car, which is slowly but surely showing that it can compete with the traditional Supercars at a fraction of the cost.”

Next stop: Sweden awaits

Fraser McConnell now turns his focus to Round 8 of the RallyX Series, slated for June 28–29 in Sweden, where both he and the evolving FC2 platform will look to build on this momentum.

With grit, growth, and podium promise on full display in Finland, McConnell continues to prove why he’s among the most exciting names in global rallycross.
