The Miami Heat demonstrated resilience and determination as they secured their fifth consecutive victory by defeating the San Antonio Spurs with a final score of 118-113 on Sunday.
Despite facing several challenges, including a short-handed roster and the daunting prospect of playing against highly-touted rookie Victor Wembanyama, the Heat managed to pull off an impressive comeback.
Duncan Robinson was instrumental in the Heat’s success, contributing 26 points, while Bam Adebayo added 24 points and 11 rebounds to his impressive performance. The final quarter witnessed a remarkable display from Robinson and Adebayo, who combined for 20 points, enabling Miami to secure their fourth consecutive win in San Antonio. Jimmy Butler also chipped in with 19 points as the Heat overcame a 19-point deficit.
Fifth straight loss
Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Victor Wembanyama put up 18 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort for San Antonio, marking their fifth straight loss. Josh Richardson, who returned to San Antonio after being traded to Miami in February, contributed 12 points, including six crucial points in the final two minutes.
The Heat showcased their resilience with runs of 17-0, 18-5, and 12-0 to recover from multiple double-digit deficits against the Spurs. Coach Erik Spoelstra praised the team’s character, describing it as their first character-building game of the year.
Despite missing Tyler Herro due to a sprained right ankle and opting to rest Kyle Lowry on the second night of a back-to-back, the Heat managed to overcome a slow start, scoring only 15 points in the opening quarter, which marked the lowest by a Spurs opponent in the period.
Wembanyama, despite the high expectations placed on him as a rookie, showed promise with an 8-for-12 shooting performance, including 2-for-9 on 3-pointers, and seven assists. Adebayo acknowledged Wembanyama’s potential and development, highlighting that the young rookie was adjusting to the NBA routine.
Remarkable comeback
The Heat’s remarkable comeback saw them erase a 19-point deficit early in the second quarter and later tie the game at 47-47. They would eventually take their first lead since the opening basket on Kevin Love’s pair of free throws, making it 75-74.
In the final quarter, the Heat showcased their ball-handling prowess by committing no turnovers, while the Spurs struggled with six turnovers. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged that his team was gradually improving with each game.
Looking ahead, the Miami Heat will face the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, while the San Antonio Spurs will play against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the same day.
