Both Guyana and Haiti faced disappointment as defeats in the Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers saw them miss out on advancing to the group stage of the tournament.
Playing at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Saturday, both teams suffered narrow 1-0 losses, with Guyana falling to The Dominican Republic and Haiti being defeated by Puerto Rico.
Guyana displayed resilience in their match but ultimately succumbed to Kathrynn González’s 55th-minute strike, which proved to be the decisive goal. Meanwhile, Haiti conceded a 41st-minute goal from Jillienne Aguilera, sealing their fate in the qualifiers.
With these results, The Dominican Republic secured a spot in Group ‘A’ alongside hosts United States, Mexico, and Argentina, while Puerto Rico advanced to Group ‘B’ where they will compete with Panama and CONMEBOL invitees Brazil and Argentina.
Unable to capitalize on their opportunities
Despite showing promise in the early stages of their respective matches, both Guyana and Haiti were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Guyana’s goalkeeper Chante Sandiford made crucial saves, while Haiti’s Shwendesky Joseph and captain Nerilia Mondesir had chances to score but were unsuccessful.
Ultimately, González’s goal for The Dominican Republic and Aguilera’s penalty conversion for Puerto Rico proved decisive, ending Guyana and Haiti’s hopes of progressing further in the Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers.
The Women’s Gold Cup, featuring 12 teams across three groups, is scheduled to run from February 20 to March 10, showcasing the top talent in women’s football across the CONCACAF region.
