Cricket’s new code! West Indies forges data-driven future through analyst training

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – As the tempo of regional cricket continues to rise, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken a decisive step toward the future—investing in the next generation of cricket minds through a strategic initiative to upskill data analysts during the 2025 West Indies Breakout League, currently underway at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

At the heart of this ground-breaking move is Avenesh Seetaram, Performance Analyst for the West Indies Senior Men’s Team, who is leading an immersive program that blends technical workshops, in-game mentorship, and performance analytics seminars. Six analysts, each aligned with a competing franchise in the league, are receiving hands-on guidance designed to prepare them for the analytical rigors of international cricket.

Designed to upskill

“These workshops are designed to upskill analysts and get them to align with best practices in analytics with the aim of broadening the pool of skilled analysts across the region,” explained Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket at CWI. “Given that we are embracing a data-driven approach to our cricket strategies, the players and coaches will have the opportunity to integrate real-time data into their strategies while the matches are in progress.”

This initiative is more than an academic exercise—it is a field-ready, high-stakes learning environment. With matches live and the pressure on, analysts are being tasked with converting data into actionable intelligence for players and coaches on the fly.

Seetaram emphasized the importance of this developmental effort, noting that the sport is evolving quickly and those behind the scenes must evolve with it.

“Data has become a critical part of the game internationally,” said Seetaram. “The chance to enlighten and expose our next batch of analysts is important because it allows for our players to be involved at this level before they get to the international stage. As the game internationally takes shape, we are preparing ourselves and molding those at the level below to aid in the transfer of information.”

Real-time analyst integration

The program includes real-time analyst integration during matches, where Seetaram will sit with each participant to demonstrate the intricacies of game-by-game data application. From crafting in-match strategies to preparing detailed team briefings, analysts are being equipped with the tools and knowledge to shape team performance with precision.

“I will be sitting with all of them for multiple games,” he noted, “helping each analyst utilize in-game analysis of data for use by their team. Additionally, I will be doing the same with preparation meetings for all teams to ensure the standards of information to players is consistent.”

With this initiative, CWI is not merely reacting to the global data revolution—it is actively building the Caribbean’s analytical cricketing core, ensuring the region’s legacy of brilliance on the pitch is matched by cutting-edge intellect behind the scenes.
