The game was marked by stellar performances from both sides.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews displayed exceptional skill and determination, delivering a masterful innings. However, her valiant effort fell just short of a century as she remained unbeaten on 99 runs. Matthews’ innings was indeed a statement of her leadership intent, as she had expressed her desire to lead by example.

Despite Matthews’ remarkable performance, the West Indies posted a total of 147 runs, which would later prove insufficient on a traditionally high-scoring ground. The turning point of the match was the dominant partnership between Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath, who efficiently chased down the target with 40 balls to spare.

Healy, McGrath stitch 86-run partnership to engineer win

Beth Mooney fell early in the innings, but Healy and McGrath then took charge, forming an 86-run partnership in just 40 balls. Their explosive batting included six sixes, and Healy reached her half-century in just 25 balls, albeit with a couple of lives during her innings. McGrath was equally impressive, achieving her 50 in 26 balls, while also striking three boundaries off a single over.

In the late stages of the chase, Aaliyah Alleyne faced repercussions for two beamers delivered at McGrath and Ash Gardner, highlighting the pressure Australia was exerting on the West Indies.

Australia’s performance with the bat overshadowed their fielding display, which included two dropped catches and some misfields on the boundary. Despite these lapses, Australia’s victory was sealed.

Matthews’ innings was a remarkable feat, becoming the highest individual score for West Indies against Australia in any format. Her impressive form in T20I throughout the year, with an average of over 40, had set the stage for this exceptional performance. Matthews showcased her aggressive intent against the Australian pace bowler Darcie Brown, with powerful shots and even a helmet-changing incident.

However, Matthews’ teammates struggled to match her level of play, contributing a combined total of just 30 runs off 49 balls. Notably, opener Shabika Gajnabi and Stafanie Taylor struggled to make substantial contributions to the team’s score. Campbelle did damage to hit a significant six but couldn’t maintain the tempo set by Matthews.

Megan Schutt, celebrating her 100th T20I, shone with the ball for Australia, conceding only 15 runs in her four overs, which included a maiden over. Her disciplined bowling was pivotal in restricting West Indies.

In summary, Australia’s victory in the opening T20I was a result of a balanced team effort, highlighted by the dominant partnership between Healy and McGrath, while Matthews’ impressive innings remained a standout performance for the West Indies.
