In an emotionally charged evening at Bramall Lane, Manchester United paid tribute to the legendary Bobby Charlton with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
The game took place mere hours after the announcement of Charlton’s passing, marking a somber yet celebratory occasion for United and its fans.
Diogo Dalot delivered a thundering strike in the 77th minute, securing the win for Manchester United. The evening began with a poignant moment as United captain Bruno Fernandes laid a wreath at the center circle before kick-off. The match ended with chants of “There’s only one Bobby Charlton” resonating from the away end, inspired by Dalot’s late goal.
Charlton, the 1966 World Cup winner
While the performance might not be remembered as one of United’s finest, the victory took a back seat to honoring the memory of Bobby Charlton. United manager Erik ten Hag expressed, “We had to show our respect for him, and I think we did that today. We wanted to celebrate but also to remember him.”
Charlton, the 1966 World Cup winner and one of England’s greatest ever players, was remembered and celebrated throughout the match. The victory provided a moment of joy on a somber day, as Dalot stated, “This is the contribution we could have today and give to the family.”
Meanwhile, in the earlier fixtures of the day, Manchester City and Liverpool both bounced back from recent disappointing results with commanding victories. Liverpool secured a 2-0 win against crosstown rival Everton in the Merseyside Derby, while Manchester City ended their two-game league losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Brighton.
In the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool benefited from a red card shown to Ashley Young in the 18th minute and a penalty decision for their first goal. Mohamed Salah scored twice for Liverpool.
Arsenal end 2-2 with Chelsea
Manchester City found their form with goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland against Brighton. Ansu Fati pulled one back for Brighton, but City held on for the win despite going down to 10 men.
In another exciting fixture, Arsenal came from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Chelsea, leaving both teams level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings.
The day also saw other matches, including Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, victories for Wolves and Brentford, and a dramatic 2-2 draw between Luton and Nottingham Forest.
