Melbourne Renegades, led by captain Hayley Matthews, faced another setback as they suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League in Sydney, Australia. Matthews’ struggle with the bat continued, contributing to her team’s challenging start in the tournament.
In the match, Melbourne Renegades posted a total of 147 for five off their allotted 20 overs at Cricket Central. However, Matthews, who had been in fine form during the recent Twenty20 International series against Australia, could only manage eight runs in her innings. This latest performance means she has accumulated just 40 runs from her three innings in the tournament.
Sydney Thunder made the run chase look easy, securing victory with 15 balls to spare. Sri Lankan cricketer Chamari Athapaththu was the standout performer, smashing a superb 80 runs off 54 deliveries and earning the Player-of-the-Match honors. She dominated a crucial 99-run opening partnership with Tahlia Wilson, who contributed 28 runs from 24 balls with five boundaries.
Georgia Wareham plays pivotal role for Renegades
Leg-spinner Georgia Wareham played a pivotal role for Renegades, both with the ball and the bat. She finished with figures of two for 23 with the ball and earlier top-scored for her team with 47 runs off 34 balls, including seven boundaries. Wareham’s partnership of 78 runs for the fifth wicket with Courtney Webb (31) helped Renegades recover from a shaky position of 62 for four in the ninth over.
Despite their efforts, Renegades couldn’t defend their total against Sydney Thunder’s strong batting performance, highlighting the struggles faced by captain Hayley Matthews and her team in the competition.
