In Port of Spain, Trinidad, Canada secured its place in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship with a resounding 3-0 victory over the host nation, completing a flawless 3-0-0 run in Group D qualifying action.
The young Canadian squad showcased dominance throughout the group stage, outscoring their opponents 15-0 across three games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Myles Morgan, Santiago Lopez, and Kevaughn Tavernier found the back of the net for Canada, with Morgan opening the scoring in the 10th minute. Morgan’s goal came from a pinpoint pass by Jeevan Badwal, displaying his clinical finishing skills.
Lopez extended Canada’s lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute with a powerful shot past Trinidad goalkeeper Ailan Panton, while Tavernier added the third goal in the 79th minute after capitalizing on a cross from Kimani Stewart-Baynes.
Six group winners progressing to the main championship
Canada’s qualification was sealed with a healthy goal difference advantage going into the match, ensuring advancement with either a win or a draw.
The CONCACAF U-20 qualifying tournament continues across Central America and the Caribbean, with only the six group winners progressing to the main championship scheduled from July 19 to August 4 in Irapuato and Celaya, Mexico.
Canada, aiming for a return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup after missing out since 2007, demonstrated superiority in all facets of the game, outshooting their opponents 63-4 (with 26-3 shots on target) over the course of the group stage.
