Reggae Girl Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw added to her impressive tally by scoring her 13th goal of the Women’s Super League campaign, helping Manchester City secure a 2-0 victory over Tottenham and stay in contention for the league title, currently held by Chelsea.
The match took place at Brisbane Road in east London, where Manchester City took the lead after just nine minutes when Amy Turner inadvertently scored an own goal. Shaw, at 26 years old, doubled the lead for City in the 51st minute.
In the Women’s Super League standings, Manchester City currently occupies the second spot, level with Arsenal on 28 points and trailing Chelsea by three points.
Gareth Taylor was pleased with the performance
City’s manager, Gareth Taylor, was pleased with the performance, especially the first goal, which showcased their control of play and build-up. He praised Lauren for her brilliant assist that led to Turner’s own goal.
“We spoke about a few things at half-time, and the players grabbed a hold of it. Lauren picks out a good assist for Bunny, who produces a good finish, and it sets us off,” said Taylor.
In their previous encounter last November, Manchester City had routed Spurs 7-0, with Shaw scoring a hat-trick. This time, although there was no goal fest, Manchester City dominated the match from the beginning.
The opening goal came from Laura Hemp’s well-placed cross at the near post, resulting in Turner scoring an own goal under pressure from Shaw.
Tottenham had their chances
Tottenham had their chances, with Martha Thomas missing a golden opportunity to equalize in the 19th minute. She also had a goal disallowed for offside in the 30th minute.
However, it was Bunny Shaw who sealed the game’s fate early in the second half. Hemp provided the assist, releasing Shaw to her left, and Shaw finished expertly with her left foot from a tight angle, finding the roof of the net.
Manchester City’s win keeps them in the hunt for the Women’s Super League title, as they continue to chase leaders Chelsea.
