Bowlers shine as West Indies gain narrow first-innings advantage over Australia

In the day-night second Test against world champions Australia, West Indies put up a resilient performance with bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach leading the way, earning their team a narrow first-innings lead.

Alzarri Joseph emerged as the top bowler, taking four wickets for 84 runs from 14 overs, while Kemar Roach contributed with three wickets for 47 runs from 11 overs.

Australia declared their innings at 289 for nine, conceding a first-innings lead of 22 to West Indies.

West Indies were bowled out for 311 in their first innings, with newcomer Kevin Sinclair making a valuable contribution of 50 runs.

End of day’s play

At the end of the second day’s play on Friday, West Indies were 13 for one in their second innings, with an overall lead of 35 runs.

West Indies trail 1-0 in the two-Test series, having lost the first Test to Australia in Adelaide by 10 wickets.

Roach expressed confidence in West Indies’ performance and their desire to win their first Test against Australia in nearly three decades.

He dismissed makeshift opener Steve Smith for six, and Alzarri Joseph got Marnus Labuschagne for three, reducing Australia to 11 for two. Roach later claimed the wickets of Cameron Green and Travis Head in quick succession before dinner.

Resistance from Australia

Australia’s Usman Khawaja put up a strong fight with a top score of 75. Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey and captain Pat Cummins also contributed significantly.

During the final half-hour before tea, Shamar Joseph dismissed Alex Carey, and Alzarri Joseph got Mitchell Starc, leaving Australia struggling at 161 for seven.

Khawaja and captain Pat Cummins put on 81 runs for the eighth wicket, reducing the deficit to under 100 runs.
