In her new role, Matthews will be responsible for training and sharing her valuable insights with young girls to prepare them for cricket championships. This appointment comes after Matthews’ remarkable achievements in 2023, where she was named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year. She became the first woman to accumulate 700 runs in a calendar year, with an impressive strike rate of 132.32 and an average of 63.63.

Matthews’ standout performance included a spectacular 132 runs against world champions Australia in the second T20 at the North Sydney Oval. She also demonstrated her bowling prowess, taking 19 wickets with her off-spin. This exceptional year earned her the prestigious ICC Cricketer of the Year award, making her only the second player from the West Indies to achieve this honor after Stafanie Taylor in 2015.

Aims to inspire and empower young girls pursuing cricket

As the newly appointed ambassador, Matthews aims to inspire and empower young girls pursuing cricket in Barbados and beyond. The Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club seeks to foster talent and promote gender equality in sports, and Matthews’ expertise will be instrumental in achieving these goals.

Expressing her joy, Matthews stated, “An absolute honor to receive this award! Grateful for a fantastic year with West Indies.” She emphasized the importance of hard work paying off and expressed her delight in contributing to the team’s success.

Matthews’ journey in cricket began at a young age, and her international debut at 16 marked the start of a stellar career. Throughout her career, she has consistently impressed, winning Player of the Match awards and making significant contributions to the West Indies team.

With Matthews’ appointment as the Global Ambassador for the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club, the future looks promising for young aspiring cricketers in the region. Her dedication to the sport and commitment to empowering the next generation highlight her as a role model both on and off the field.
