Jamaica international Michail Antonio made a significant impact on his return to English Premier League action, scoring his first league goal in eight months to secure a 1-1 draw for West Ham United against high-flying Aston Villa at London Stadium.
The veteran striker, soon to turn 34, broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a remarkable diving header, giving the hosts the lead. However, Aston Villa fought back late in the game, with Nicolo Zaniolo netting the equalizer in the 79th minute.
Although West Ham thought they had snatched victory deep into stoppage time through Tomas Soucek, VAR intervened to disallow the goal due to a hand-ball infringement.
Antonio’s performance earned him the Player-of-the-Match award
Despite the disappointment of having a goal ruled out, Antonio’s performance earned him the Player-of-the-Match award. His manager, David Moyes, emphasized the importance of Antonio’s goal-scoring contribution, highlighting the striker’s role in the team.
Antonio’s goal marked his third of the season and his first league start since recovering from a knee injury sustained last November. His impact was further evident as he nearly doubled his tally in the 50th minute, only to see his effort disallowed by VAR.
A late substitution, Zaniolo salvaged a point for Aston Villa, capitalizing on defensive lapses to secure the draw.
With this result, West Ham sits seventh in the Premier League standings with 44 points, trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by 12 points.
