Among the competitors is the defending champion, Brac Rebel from Grand Cayman, which will be one of five boats from the island joining Jamaican vessels in the high-stakes tournament.

Now in its eighth year, the tournament has grown into a must-attend event for sportfishing aficionados, offering US$330,000 in cash prizes and trophies across multiple categories. The grand prize will go to the angler who catches the largest marlin, but the stakes are even higher, with the overall winner earning a chance to represent Jamaica at the Offshore World Championships in Costa Rica.

Impressive catches

Speaking at a recent event hosted at Stewart’s Automotive Group Jaguar Land Rover Showroom in Kingston, Tournament Director Robert ‘Bobby’ Stewart expressed excitement about the upcoming competition. “We are thrilled to once again welcome anglers from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands to the Superstars of Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament. This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate sportfishing while showcasing the unmatched beauty of our local surroundings,” Stewart said.

Jamaican Angler Peter Cowan, who will compete with his vessel Integrity, is optimistic about the conditions, believing they could lead to some impressive catches. “Once the fish cooperate with us, I am anticipating an excellent tournament. I believe that the vessel that lands four marlin this year will come out on top. It is a three-day tournament, and so you need to be on the board the first day and finish strong,” Cowan said.

Launched in 2017 with a fleet of 16 vessels, the tournament has quickly gained prominence, boasting one of the highest marlin catch rates per day and per boat in Jamaica.

This year’s tournament promises fierce competition and breathtaking moments as the best of the best set their sights on claiming the top prizes and prestige.
