Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to offer unprecedented US$5 million prize pot

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will set a new benchmark for prize money, with over US$5 million up for grabs for the 10 participating teams.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed Tuesday that the champions of the tournament, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from October 3 to 20, will be awarded an impressive US$2.34 million. This represents a significant 134 per cent increase compared to the US$1 million that 2023 winners Australia received.

The runners-up are set to earn US$1.17 million, while the two semi-finalists will walk away with US$675,000 each—more than triple the amount given out in the previous edition.

Prize pool has soared to nearly US$8 million

In total, the prize pool has soared to nearly US$8 million (US$7,958,080), a dramatic rise from the US$2.45 million distributed in last year's event.

The West Indies Women will be eyeing their second T20 World Cup title, having previously won in 2016.

Even in the group stages, teams will benefit from the increased financial rewards. Each victory during this phase will now bring in US$31,154, up 78 per cent from the previous year’s US$17,500.

Teams that don’t progress beyond the group stage will still receive a base payment of US$112,500, ensuring that all 10 participating sides share in the financial windfall, regardless of their final standing.

ICC’s commitment to fostering the growth

Additionally, teams finishing between fifth and eighth place will collect US$270,000 each, while those finishing ninth and tenth will receive US$135,000 each.

These prize increases emphasize the ICC’s commitment to fostering the growth and recognition of women’s cricket, providing substantial financial backing for players and teams.

“The historic prize money reflects the ICC’s drive towards parity between the men’s and women’s games, and elevates the Women’s T20 World Cup as one of the premier global sporting events,” the ICC stated in its announcement.
