West Indies Women have been dealt an untimely setback ahead of their One-Day International series against Ireland, with influential all-rounder Chinelle Henry ruled out through injury just before the opening match.

Qualification race takes center stage

The three-match series carries significance well beyond the immediate contest, marking the West Indies' third assignment in the new ICC Women's Championship cycle.

Every point earned will strengthen the regional side's bid for automatic qualification to the next ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, making the Ireland tour an important early test in a campaign expected to unfold over the coming months.

Head coach Shane Deitz emphasized that the series represents a crucial opportunity to establish momentum in the qualification standings while overcoming the challenges of playing in unfamiliar conditions.

"Ireland would be a tough opponent in their conditions, and we need to adapt fast and make sure we play some good cricket."

Deitz stressed that victories in Ireland could prove invaluable as the qualification race intensifies.

"These are valuable points for qualification for the next ODI World Cup, and this series and the next few series over the next six to eight months are really important for us to get some wins on the board and make sure we're in contention for that next ODI World Cup," Deitz said.

Matthews: Focus has shifted to the road ahead

Captain Hayley Matthews believes the squad has already processed its disappointment following its semi-final exit at the recent Women's T20 World Cup and is fully committed to the challenges that lie ahead.

Rather than dwelling on the past, Matthews said the players have embraced the lessons learned and are eager to begin the next phase of their international campaign.

"We've had a little bit of time to reflect on the World Cup and take the lessons from it. Our focus is firmly on what's ahead. Everyone is excited to get back out there, and this ODI series against Ireland is a great opportunity to build on our successes in the World Cup," Matthews said.

Chance to reverse recent result

The tour also presents an opportunity for the West Indies to respond after Ireland claimed victory over the Caribbean side during the recently concluded Women's T20 World Cup.

With Henry unavailable, the visitors will lean on a balanced squad featuring experienced campaigners alongside emerging talent as they seek to begin the championship cycle on a winning note and strengthen their pursuit of direct qualification for the 50-over World Cup.

West Indies Women Squad: Hayley Matthews (captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Jahzara Claxton, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Jannillea Glasgow, Realeanna Grimmond, Shawnisha Hector, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Mandy Mangru, Ashmini Munisar, Karishma Ramharack, and Stafanie Taylor.
