The West Indies cricket team triumphed in their five-match Twenty20 series against India on Sunday, clinching the series 3-2 after securing an eight-wicket win in Florida with 12 balls to spare. Despite India’s earlier successes in both the Test and ODI series, the team opted to bat first in the deciding T20 game, managing a score of 9-165 at Central Broward Stadium. However, the West Indies confidently answered with a score of 2-171 in just 18 overs, despite interruptions caused by inclement weather.

Batting highlights

The West Indies’ offensive was spearheaded by opener Brandon King, who delivered an impressive performance with an unbeaten 85 off 55 balls, decorated with six sixes and five fours.  King’s outstanding play was complemented by Nicholas Pooran’s 47, with the pair forming a 107-run partnership for the second wicket. In a contrast to their previous match, India’s openers could not recreate their earlier success.  Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early on with just five runs, falling victim to spinner Akeal Hosein, who later also claimed the wicket of Shubman Gill at nine runs.  India’s batting was salvaged by Suryakumar Yadav, who topped the score chart with a 61 off 45 balls.  On the bowling front, Romario Shepherd stood out for the West Indies, claiming 4 wickets at the cost of 31 runs.

Team changes and strategies

West Indies made strategic changes for the game, recalling fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and adding Roston Chase to bolster their spin attack.  This meant that Obed McCoy and Odean Smith were side-lined. Following a victory for India in the third T20 at Providence, Guyana, the series shifted to the US.  However, the West Indies managed to emerge victorious in the second T20 in Providence and also secured a win in the opener played in Tarouba, Trinidad.
