The atmosphere around Seattle’s Lumen Field reflected the growing excitement surrounding the tournament. The stadium, normally known for the energy of Seattle Seahawks crowds and the passionate following of Seattle Sounders FC, became a sea of red, white and blue as supporters created a wall of noise before kickoff.

Balogun sparks early advantage as Australia self-destruct

The Americans entered the match without injured attacking star Christian Pulisic, who was ruled out because of a calf problem.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino adjusted his approach, moving to a 4-4-2 system and bringing Ricardo Pepi into the starting lineup.

The tactical change quickly paid off as the United States grabbed the lead for the second consecutive match.

In the 11th minute, Folarin Balogun collected possession on the left side, burst toward the byline and delivered a dangerous cutback into the penalty area.

With Pepi closing in, Australian defender Cameron Burgess attempted to intervene but only managed to turn the ball into his own goal.

The early setback left Australia struggling to find attacking rhythm, while the United States controlled possession and repeatedly threatened through their movement and width.

Freeman doubles lead before halftime as VAR confirms goal

The Americans continued to press and eventually found a second breakthrough just before the interval.

The goal came from a clever set-piece routine that caught Australia’s defence off guard.

Antonee Robinson delivered a free kick from the right side but avoided the crowded penalty area, instead finding Sergino Dest positioned outside the box.

Dest’s attempt was blocked and floated into the air, allowing Alex Freeman to react first and head the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

The assistant referee initially ruled the goal offside, but VAR overturned the decision, sending Lumen Field into celebration once again.

The finish was particularly memorable for Freeman, whose father Antonio Freeman was a Super Bowl-winning NFL wide receiver.

Australia fight back but USA defence holds firm

Australia attempted to change the course of the match after halftime, introducing Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda, the two players who scored in their previous win over Turkey.

The substitutions immediately increased Australia’s attacking urgency.

However, the United States nearly extended their advantage when Balogun raced through on goal, only for his heavy touch to allow the defence to recover and block the attempt.

Australia’s strongest opportunity arrived in the 62nd minute when Cristian Volpato received a cutback from Irankunda but fired over the crossbar.

The pressure continued late in the contest as Metcalfe forced a save, Irankunda created danger with his pace, and Jason Geria saw a close-range effort denied.

Hosts survive late test and look toward bigger dreams

The closing minutes became increasingly tense, with both teams showing frustration as Australia pushed desperately for a way back into the match.

But the United States remained organized and completed the victory with a clean sheet.

The result means the Americans can approach their final group match against Turkey with qualification already secured, giving them valuable momentum and confidence.

With home support behind them and their form continuing to rise, expectations are growing that this United States team could go beyond the round of 32 and challenge for a place in the quarter-finals, a stage they have not reached since their memorable run in 2002.
