The United States Coast Guard has repatriated 27 Cuban nationals on Monday after they were intercepted aboard an unseaworthy vessel in the Yucatán Channel, according to authorities.
The operation was carried out by crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, specifically the cutter Winslow Griesser, following an earlier detection by the cutter Raymond Evans.
Officials said Sector Key West watchstanders were alerted to an unlit vessel in the channel. A boarding team was dispatched and found the boat taking on water, with no fuel or drinking water onboard and at risk of sinking. The 27 individuals were taken aboard for safety and later transferred to the Winslow Griesser for processing and repatriation.
The migrants were subsequently returned to Cuba as part of standard maritime interdiction procedures.
A Coast Guard liaison officer, Lt. Cmdr. Luis Garcia, warned that attempting sea migration on overcrowded or unsafe vessels poses severe risks, adding that the Coast Guard and partner agencies maintain a constant maritime presence to detect and prevent illegal crossings.
Authorities said that once individuals are taken aboard a cutter, they are provided with food, water, shelter and basic medical care while identity processing is conducted.
The operation falls under broader enforcement efforts coordinated through Homeland Security Task Force–Southeast and Operation Vigilant Sentry, which aim to prevent unlawful maritime migration while safeguarding life at sea.
Officials also noted that maritime interdictions play a significant role in broader security operations, including efforts to combat drug trafficking routes in the Caribbean and surrounding waters.
