US citizen arrested for attempting to smuggle ganja, laced edibles into Jamaica

An American citizen was arrested by law enforcement officials at the Norman Manley International Airport following an attempt to smuggle an undisclosed quantity of ganja into the country. 

The individual, whose identity is undisclosed due to the ongoing investigations, raised suspicion after disembarking from a flight originating in Florida. 

Reports are that Customs Officers, equipped with state-of-the-art scanning technology, detected peculiar anomalies within the passenger’s luggage.

Reports are that during routine security checks on Tuesday, Customs Officers, became suspicious when scanning equipment revealed anomalies in the passenger’s luggage. 

This led  to a thorough inspection, where the drugs and edibles were uncovered

The incident raises concerns given a recent event in early October, where several students were hospitalized after unwittingly consuming sweets containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a major psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

Stance against illicit substances

Customs CEO/Commissioner, Velma Ricketts Walker, lauded the unwavering dedication of the officers responsible for thwarting this smuggling attempt. 

She emphasized the critical role played by their vigilance in preventing the distribution of these dangerous THC-laced products within Jamaica.

A stern warning to air passengers

Commissioner Ricketts Walker issued a stern warning to air travelers, urging them to refrain from carrying THC products into Jamaica. 

She emphasized that such items would be subject to customs control and strict enforcement actions.

The interception of these illicit products aligns with Customs’ broader mission of safeguarding the overall health and well-being of the Jamaican people.
