Global ride-share company, Uber is now operating in Kingston, Jamaica.

The United States-based company had, earlier this year, announced plans to launch its services in Jamaica. The operations began on June 15th. The company says Kingston will serve as a test market.

“We are happy to announce our arrival in Kingston to play a role in Jamaica’s post-COVID-19 economic reactivation. Our mission in Jamaica and other cities where the app is available is to create opportunities through accessible mobility, acting as an ally to the city. We look forward to serving Jamaicans and visitors to the island,” said the company.

Via its website, it also offered persons the opportunity to sign up as drivers for the company.

The company said interested drivers must be 21 years of age or older, have a 2010 or newer model year vehicle, and present a valid driver's license, vehicle registration and insurance.

The app serves as a contact portal between two parties: a lessor partner and a user, who will agree to sign a private lease contract every time they want to get around the city.

Under this model, both the lessor partner and the user enter a private agreement that entails strict fulfillment of the rules.

The ride-sharing company said the Uber app has ensured that the experience for both users and lessor partners meets strict health safety protocols.

The app features innovations such as mask verification technology, which uses in-app selfies to confirm masks are being worn.

Uber Technologies Inc is a peer-to-peer ride-sharing, taxi cab, food delivery, and transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California, with operations in over 700 cities worldwide.
