Twin tons lift West Indies Women to commanding series triumph over Ireland

Captain Hayley Matthews and veteran Stafanie Taylor delivered a batting exhibition for the ages, each compiling magnificent centuries to propel West Indies Women to a commanding six-wicket victory over Ireland Women in the second One-Day International on Sunday and secure the three-match series.

For the second consecutive match, Matthews stood at the heart of the West Indies' success, earning Player-of-the-Match honors after blasting an even 100 from just 94 deliveries. Taylor complemented her captain perfectly with an unbeaten 100 from 105 balls as the visitors chased down Ireland's 241 for seven with remarkable ease, reaching 242 for four in only 38.5 overs.

The emphatic victory handed West Indies an unbeatable 2-0 advantage ahead of Wednesday's series finale and continued the batting dominance they displayed in their record-breaking chase in the opening ODI.

Early blow gives way to complete control

The chase began on shaky ground when opener Realeanna Grimmond was dismissed without scoring in the opening over, edging Orla Prendergast behind the wicket.

Any hopes Ireland had of capitalizing on that breakthrough quickly disappeared.

Matthews and Taylor seized control, constructing a magnificent 158-run partnership that steadily dismantled the Irish bowling attack while scoring at better than six runs per over.

Matthews reached her half-century first, bringing up the milestone in emphatic fashion by launching Aimee Maguire over the boundary for six off the 56th ball she faced.

The West Indies skipper continued to dominate the scoring throughout the partnership. By the time she secured her 13th One-Day International century with a single driven through the off side off Louise Little, Taylor had quietly accumulated 47 runs at the opposite end.

Matthews' outstanding innings ended immediately after the milestone when Little dismissed her for a sparkling 100 that featured 14 fours and two sixes, leaving the visitors comfortably placed at 159 for two after 26 overs.

Taylor finishes the job in style

Ireland briefly raised hopes of a comeback by removing both Deandra Dottin and Jannillea Glasgow for nine runs apiece, reducing West Indies to 199 for four.

The equation, however, remained firmly in the visitors' favor, with only 43 runs required from 94 deliveries.

Taylor ensured there would be no late drama.

She found dependable support from Shemaine Campbelle as the pair calmly added an unbroken 43-run partnership to steer the West Indies home with 67 balls remaining.

The experienced right-hander fittingly reached her 10th ODI century in dramatic fashion, striking Alana Dalzell for a boundary and a six off consecutive deliveries to bring the scores level before a no-ball from the same bowler officially sealed the victory.

Ireland's recovery ends in late collapse

Earlier, Ireland appeared poised to post a significantly larger total after recovering from an uncertain start.

West Indies struck early through Deandra Dottin, who removed openers Sarah Forbes and captain Gaby Lewis, before Matthews claimed the prized wicket of Prendergast to leave the hosts struggling at 74 for three.

Amy Hunter and Rebecca Stokell then rebuilt the innings impressively, combining for a 106-run, fourth-wicket partnership that carried Ireland to a healthy 180 for three after 40 overs.

Stokell scored a polished 57 from 76 balls before becoming Afy Fletcher's victim, while Hunter followed shortly afterward after top-scoring with 67 from 87 deliveries, falling to Matthews with the total on 188 for five.

Those dismissals triggered a dramatic loss of momentum as Ireland's lower order failed to capitalize on the strong platform, managing only modest additions during the closing overs to finish on 241 for seven.

Matthews and Dottin shine with the ball

Before spearheading the successful run chase, Matthews also played a pivotal role with the ball, claiming 2-34, including the crucial wicket of Hunter.

Dottin was even more economical, returning outstanding figures of 2-15 to help restrict Ireland after their promising middle-order recovery.

With back-to-back dominant batting displays and consecutive victories already secured, West Indies Women will head into Wednesday's final ODI seeking a clean sweep and further evidence that their batting unit has found outstanding form.
