Trio of Sunshine Girls shine as Adelaide Thunderbirds edge past Queensland Firebirds

In a thrilling start to their Australia Super Netball title defense, the Adelaide Thunderbirds clinched a narrow 63-62 victory over the Queensland Firebirds, buoyed by the stellar performance of their Sunshine Girls trio: Romelda Aiken-George, Shamera Sterling-Humphey, and Latanya Wilson.

Romelda Aiken-George showcased her scoring prowess, netting an impressive 48 goals from 57 attempts. Meanwhile, Shamera Sterling-Humphey and Latanya Wilson demonstrated their defensive prowess with a combined total of 17 deflections and nine intercepts, playing crucial roles in securing the Thunderbirds' victory.

The match remained tightly contested throughout, with the Thunderbirds holding a slim one-goal lead heading into the final quarter. In a dramatic finish, Sterling-Humphey, Wilson, and their teammates showed resilience and determination to seal the win.

The importance of stepping up when the team needs it

Reflecting on her performance, Sterling-Humphey emphasized the importance of stepping up when the team needed it most, highlighting the valuable experience brought by herself, Wilson, and Matilda Garrett in the Thunderbirds' defense.

“I’ve got to turn up when my team needs me, and that’s what I did,” Sterling-Humphrey said afterwards.

“Myself, Latanya and Matilda (Garrett) bring experience in our defence and we have an awesome midcourt.”

A perfect 64-from-64 shooting performance

Elsewhere in the league, Jhaniele Fowler led the West Coast Fever to an 84-65 victory over Giants Netball, dominating the game with a perfect 64-from-64 shooting performance. Shanice Beckford and Kadie Ann Dehaney also made significant contributions for the Fever.

Despite a strong effort from Samantha Wallace-Joseph, the New South Wales Swifts suffered a 79-63 defeat to Sunshine Coast Lightning, while the Melbourne Vixens secured a 68-61 win over the Mavericks in the Melbourne derby.

The Australia Super Netball season is off to an exciting start, with intense competition and standout performances from players like the Sunshine Girls trio, showcasing their talent on the court.
