Trinidad and Tobago and Tobago’s dreams of a second appearance at the FIFA World Cup is fast becoming a nightmare following a 2-1 loss to Honduras at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad on Friday, September 1.

Seventh loss for TNT

Goals from Hondurans Alexander Lopez and Alberth Elis secured a comfortable lead for the Central American team, before Joevin Jones’ penalty briefly gave the Trinidadians a glimmer of hope. The losing result marks the seventh loss in eight games for the twin island republic.

Honduras went ahead after profiting from the indecisive fumbling of a T&T defender who failed to clear the ball, after goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams failed in his attempt to gather in a weak shot on goal.

Lopez rammed home the resulting opportunity high into the roof of the net from just outside the area in the 7th minute.

The hosts found themselves in even more trouble nine minutes later. Romell Quioto’s cutback found an unmarked Elis, who had all the time in the world to pick his spot after the T&T defense seemed to have lost their zest and failed to track back effectively towards their goal.

Jones scores penalty for TNT

Jones showed plenty of composure to put away a penalty after striker Kevin Molino was brought down in the area in the 67 minute, but the twin island republic was unable to complete the comeback and came away from the encounter empty handed.

In other CONCACAF hexagonal qualifiers, The USA was downed 2-0 by a rejuvenated Costa Rica in an away feature while confederation favorites Mexico beat Panama 1-0.
