Tragic death of 10-month-old girl at Bustamante Hospital for Children sparks investigation

The Jamaican police are investigating the death of a 10-month-old girl who was undergoing treatment at the facility the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday morning, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting questions about the circumstances surrounding her demise.

Initial hospitalization raises concerns

According to information from Jamaican media sources, the ordeal began when the baby girl was initially admitted to the hospital on Friday. 

Reports are that the infant displayed distressing symptoms, including respiratory issues and fever.

Medical professionals diagnosed her with bronchopneumonia and was sent home with antibiotics and Panadol.

A deteriorating condition

It is further reported that the baby’s health took a turn for the worse, and was taken back to the hospital the next day. 

Alarming symptoms, including vomiting and a marked state of lethargy, were observed.

Reports are that blood was also noted in her diaper.

Disturbing findings emerge

The medical team at Bustamante Hospital contacted the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) to look into the matter. 

Subsequent examinations revealed bruises on the infant’s body, vaginal laceration, and bleeding. 

Desperate measures and an unfortunate diagnosis

The baby’s condition continued to deteriorate and she revealed multiple transfusions of blood products.

She was tested positive for dengue at another hospital.

Despite the efforts of the medical staff, the baby girl died following an operation.
