Hot weather is part of life across the Caribbean, but prolonged periods of high temperatures can turn everyday discomfort into a health concern. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has warned that rising temperatures, alongside more frequent, intense and longer-lasting heatwaves, are increasing health risks across the region (Pan American Health Organization, 2024). In 2026, PAHO also identified heatwaves among the health threats associated with a potential 2026–2027 El Niño event (Pan American Health Organization, 2026). 

Air conditioning can help, but it isn’t the only option. Small changes to how a home manages sunlight, airflow, appliances and sleeping areas can make hot days easier to handle. Many are inexpensive, renter-friendly and useful even when power supplies are under strain.

Start With the Windows

Direct sunlight through glass can quickly warm a room, so windows are one of the first places to focus. During the hottest part of the day, close curtains, blinds or shades on windows receiving strong sun. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends this approach to limit rises in indoor temperature and notes that external shading, including awnings and louvres, can reduce heat entering a home more effectively than indoor shades alone (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2026). 

In bedrooms, controlling sunlight can also create a darker space for rest. Blackout or thermal-lined curtains are one practical option. The aim isn’t to seal a room indefinitely, but to stop strong daytime sun from adding unnecessary heat. 

Time Your Ventilation

Opening every window all day can feel sensible, but it can backfire when the air outside is hotter than the air indoors.

The EPA advises keeping windows closed when outdoor air is hotter, then opening them when conditions outside become cooler (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2026). In many homes, that makes early morning, evening and overnight ventilation particularly useful.

Cross-ventilation can improve airflow. Where it is safe, open windows or doors on opposite sides of the home and keep internal doors open so air can move through. A fan near a window can help draw cooler air in or push warmer air out.

This strategy depends on conditions. On very hot or humid nights, outdoor air may not cool enough to provide meaningful relief.

Use Fans Where People Actually Are

Fans don’t lower room temperature. They move air across the skin, helping people feel cooler. Leaving a fan running in an empty room therefore wastes electricity without cooling the space itself.

The U.S. Department of Energy says a ceiling fan may allow an air-conditioning thermostat setting to be raised by about 4°F, or 2.2°C, without reducing comfort (U.S. Department of Energy, 2022). Used together, fans and air conditioning can make occupied rooms comfortable without asking the cooling system to do all the work. 

There is an important limit. The EPA cautions that fans alone shouldn’t be relied on to prevent heat-related illness in a closed room when temperatures reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit, roughly 35°C or higher (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2026). In extreme heat, seek a cooler environment where possible. 

Keep Cooking Heat Under Control

A hot kitchen can make the rest of a home uncomfortable, especially in apartments or compact houses. On very warm days, changing how and when you cook can help.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends using smaller appliances, such as microwaves, toaster ovens or benchtop grills, instead of a conventional oven where practical because they use less energy and avoid adding as much excess heat to the room (U.S. Department of Energy, 2012). 

Timing matters too. Meals that require long periods on the stove or in the oven can be prepared earlier in the morning or later in the evening. Batch cooking can also reduce how often the kitchen heats up during the week.

There is no need to overhaul family meals. The goal is simply to avoid creating extra indoor heat at the hottest point of the day.

Cut Unnecessary Heat From Electronics

Televisions, computers, gaming equipment and lighting all release some heat while operating. One device may make little difference, but several running together in a closed room can add to the heat load.

Switch off equipment that isn’t being used, particularly in bedrooms during the afternoon. Turn off unnecessary lighting and avoid leaving high-powered electronics running out of habit. The Department of Energy similarly recommends switching off or unplugging electronics that aren’t needed (U.S. Department of Energy, 2012). 

These changes are modest, but home cooling is often cumulative. Blocking sunlight, reducing appliance heat and moving air at the right time can work better together than any one measure alone.

Make the Bedroom a Priority

Hot nights can be particularly difficult because poor sleep carries into the next day. PAHO advises people to “keep your living space as cool as possible” and recommends reducing daytime heat load by closing windows or curtains facing direct sunlight (Pan American Health Organization, 2024). 

Treat the bedroom as a room to protect from heat throughout the day. Keep strong sun out, limit unnecessary electronics, use lightweight bedding and ventilate once outdoor temperatures fall.

If air conditioning is available, concentrating cooling on occupied rooms rather than trying to chill an entire home may be more practical. Without air conditioning, focus fans and evening ventilation around sleeping areas.

Know When Comfort Measures Aren’t Enough

Cooling a home is about more than comfort. Heat exposure can contribute to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. PAHO identifies young children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses among those who can face greater risk during heatwaves (Pan American Health Organization, 2025). 

Household measures such as shading and fans can help, but they don’t replace medical advice. If someone shows signs of serious heat illness, including confusion, collapse or severe weakness, seek urgent medical help.

Conclusion

Making a home easier to live in during hot weather doesn’t always require major renovation. Blocking strong sunlight, ventilating at the right time, using fans strategically, limiting cooking heat and protecting sleeping areas can all improve day-to-day comfort.

For Caribbean households and diaspora communities facing hotter spells, these measures are flexible. Renters can use them, homeowners can build on them, and families can adapt them to their own layout and local conditions.

The most effective approach is usually a combination: keep heat out during the day, let it escape when the outdoor air cools, and concentrate cooling where people spend the most time. Small changes, repeated consistently, can make stubborn heat much easier to live with.
