The site, formerly home to the Shaker Village clubhouse, had become a source of frustration for residents since Hurricane Irma destroyed the building nearly a decade ago. What remained were four crumbling, unsupported walls — visible from Commercial Boulevard — which became magnets for graffiti and a symbol of neighborhood decline.
“The removal of those walls isn't just about cleaning up an eyesore,” said city officials. “It’s a turning point, both visually and symbolically, for this community.”
The new community center is a direct result of the East Side Parks Feasibility Study, part of Tamarac’s broader mission to expand access to quality recreational and gathering spaces. The project was made possible entirely through grant funding, meaning no taxpayer dollars were used for the acquisition of the property — a point of pride for city leaders focused on fiscal responsibility.
Once completed, the Eastside Community Center will offer a 10,000-square-foot indoor space along with a walking trail, playground, pavilion, and fishing pier, all designed to foster connection and well-being among residents of all ages.
