T20 World Cup opener set for Dallas, final to grace Barbados

Organizers of the Twenty20 World Cup have revealed the locations for the opening and final matches of the highly anticipated tournament. The expanded 20-team event, jointly hosted by the United States and the West Indies, is scheduled to commence on June 1 and conclude on June 29.

The opening match will take place at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas, Texas, where the USA will face Canada. Both teams will make their debut appearances at a T20 World Cup. This marks the first time a major international cricket tournament will be held in the United States.

A new venue located 30 miles east of downtown Manhattan will host a pivotal clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on Sunday, June 9. This game is among the eight fixtures scheduled to be held at the 34,000-seat stadium being constructed in Nassau County.

Lauderhill in South Florida, known as the most established cricket venue in the USA, will host matches featuring India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. While cricket may be considered a niche sport in the United States, it enjoys significant support from the South Asian and Caribbean communities.

A foothold for the sport in the United States

Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave expressed that the tournament represents a serious effort by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to establish a foothold for the sport in the United States, particularly with the inclusion of the new venue in the New York area. Grave emphasized that this move is part of a broader strategy to expand cricket's presence in the American market.

The selection of New York for the India vs. Pakistan game provides an opportunity to attract a large crowd for one of cricket's most significant rivalries. Grave highlighted the potential for this match to generate substantial interest, likening it to a sporting event rivaling the Super Bowl in terms of attention and coverage.

Defending champions England will initiate their title defense on June 4 in Barbados against Scotland, and Pakistan will begin their campaign by playing the USA in Dallas. Notably, England will face traditional rivals Australia in Barbados on June 8.

20 participating teams

The 20 participating teams have been divided into four groups of five, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the 'Super Eights' stage. The Super Eight games will be hosted in the Caribbean, specifically in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The top two teams from each group in the Super Eight will progress to the semi-finals, which are scheduled to take place in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago on June 26 and 27. The ultimate showdown, the final, is set to be held in Barbados on June 29.
