SVG ministry of health warns of increase in swine flu cases

The Ministry of Health in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has issued an advisory, urging both residents and visitors to take proactive measures in safeguarding themselves against an array of infectious diseases. 

This alert encompasses the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, dengue fever, leptospirosis, and a resurgence of Influenza A – H1N1, known as the swine flu.

Surge in influenza A – H1N1 Cases

Between December 25th of last year and January 6th of this year, a palpable surge in Influenza A – H1N1 cases has set off alarm bells within the healthcare system. 

During this brief yet concerning timeframe, the Ministry of Health reported 32 laboratory-confirmed cases of Influenza A – H1N1.

COVID-19 continues to loom

As of January 6, the tally of confirmed SARS-COV2 cases in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has reached a total of 9,804 cases since the initial outbreak in 2021. 

In 2023 alone, the country witnessed 243 confirmed cases, and while the new year has just begun, two additional cases have already been reported in 2024.

Dengue fever and leptospirosis statistics

The Ministry of Health’s advisory also highlighted the prevalence of other infectious diseases in the region. 

In 2023, St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded 17 cases of dengue fever, emphasizing the continued importance of vigilance in combating this mosquito-borne illness. 

Additionally, there were 20 reported cases of leptospirosis in the same year, prompting heightened awareness and preventative measures.
