Surviving osteosarcoma: Jamaican cancer survivor shares story of faith and resilience in new memoir

Jamaican author and advocate Mario Spencer is sharing his journey of survival, faith, and recovery in a new memoir that chronicles his battle with a rare and aggressive bone cancer diagnosed during his teenage years.

Spencer was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at age 16, a life-threatening condition that challenged both his health and mobility at a critical stage of adolescence. His debut memoir, A New Beginning: A Journey Through Cancer, Faith and Resilience, released on May 1, recounts the physical, emotional, and spiritual toll of his diagnosis and treatment, as well as the process of rebuilding his life afterward.

Osteosarcoma is a type of primary bone cancer that develops in the cells that form new bone tissue. It is the most common bone cancer in children and adolescents, often appearing during growth spurts in the teenage years. The disease typically begins in areas such as the long bones of the legs or arms and can be aggressive, with treatment usually involving a combination of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the affected bone tissue.

Rather than focusing solely on illness, the book explores what comes after survival—grappling with identity, rediscovering purpose, and adjusting to life shaped by a major medical trauma. Spencer reflects on how the experience reshaped his outlook and ultimately led him toward advocacy, entrepreneurship, and a deeper appreciation for faith, travel, and relationships.

“This book is for anyone facing what feels impossible,” Spencer said. “Cancer changed my life, but it also revealed a strength I never knew I had. I want readers to know that even in life’s darkest moments, hope, faith, and resilience can create a new beginning.”

The memoir includes a visual section titled Journey Through Images, featuring personal photographs that document key moments in his recovery and personal journey. The cover design is inspired by the tranquil landscape of Rio Nuevo in St. Mary, Jamaica.

Today, Spencer is an advocate for cancer awareness through Sarcoma Jamaica, an initiative focused on supporting individuals and families affected by sarcoma and other rare cancers. He also works in marketing and digital storytelling, and is developing Itiner.Ease, a travel platform focused on personalised travel experiences, alongside his fiancée, Daniella Chin.
