Suriname authorities have arrested 14 Chinese nationals following a joint police and military operation after videos showing armed individuals wearing military-style uniforms and carrying the Chinese flag in the country’s rainforest sparked public concern.
Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath said the arrests were made late Tuesday after reports emerged about the group’s presence in the interior of the country.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed Chinese nationals marching through the rainforest while carrying firearms. The images were reportedly recorded near Sarakreek in the Brokopondo district, an area known for illegal gold mining activities.
Monorath said authorities must determine the purpose of the group’s activities and whether any laws were broken.
“As far as we know at this moment, they were reportedly carrying out security duties. But the criminal investigation must determine exactly what they were doing there and why it happened in this manner,” he said.
He emphasized that Suriname has its own security forces responsible for maintaining law and order.
“We have a National Army and a police force. The investigation will have to determine why these individuals operated there in this way,” Monorath added.
Following the reports, a mixed police and military unit supported by helicopters was deployed to the area. The operation resulted in the arrest of the 14 individuals and the seizure of a quantity of weapons and ammunition.
The minister said the operation was conducted under the leadership of the Central Regional Commander. He added that not all of the Chinese nationals arrested are believed to be residing in Suriname illegally, with some reportedly holding valid documents.
Authorities are awaiting the outcome of the criminal investigation and court proceedings before determining further action.
The incident has heightened concerns over security in Suriname’s interior, where illegal gold mining remains widespread. The remote region is home to thousands of illegal miners, including Surinamese, Brazilian and Chinese nationals, and government officials have long faced challenges monitoring the vast rainforest territory due to its size and limited accessibility.
Monorath said the difficulties of governing the interior cannot be used as a justification for unlawful activity.
