Surging cholera incidents worldwide raise alarm
United Nations agencies have issued alarming reports of a resurgent cholera crisis, with over 667,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths reported worldwide last year.
Cholera’s deadliest grip is felt in Malawi, where 1,771 lives have been claimed, and Haiti, with 1,156 deaths, facing an unprecedented public health crisis, as of mid-December last year.
Surpassing previous records
Preliminary data from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that by December 15 last year, cholera cases in 2023 had already surpassed 472,697, which was reported in 2022.
WHO’s response
In response to this global health crisis, the WHO is conducting a comprehensive review of its cholera response, aiming to make evidence-based adjustments and better coordinate activities to combat cholera in the coming months.
