Selection designed to balance present success and future growth

Netball Jamaica President Karen Baugh expressed confidence that the selectors had assembled the ideal combination of seasoned campaigners and rising prospects, despite acknowledging that finalizing the roster proved far from straightforward.

"The selection process was quite challenging, but we feel that we have selected a very strong team. We are happy for the senior team members who are represented here as well as some new talent, and it is really what it's all about. A tournament like Commonwealth should be about exposing new talent," Baugh said.

She believes the blend of experience and youth gives Jamaica the right formula to compete with the world's elite while continuing to strengthen the national program for years to come.

Sunshine Girls eye historic first Commonwealth Games title

Having captured a memorable silver medal at the previous Commonwealth Games, Jamaica enters this year's tournament with ambitions of climbing one more step onto the podium.

Baugh said the Sunshine Girls are expected to once again challenge the world's best, with the ultimate objective being the nation's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.

"We are expecting the team to do well. We expect to be right up there with the top teams in the world.

"We got a silver medal at the last Commonwealth Games. So that's in the back of our minds, a podium finish, preferably at the very top for the first time.

"But we are going to be out there working hard for the team to gel and to put it all out on the court when the time comes," she added.

Corporate support continues to grow

The Sunshine Girls also received another boost ahead of the Games with Kendel joining the list of corporate partners supporting the team's campaign.

The company becomes the latest organization to invest in Jamaica's medal hopes, following the Supreme Ventures Foundation, which recently committed $3.5 million toward the team's preparation camp in Durham, England.

The additional backing is expected to strengthen the team's build-up as the Sunshine Girls pursue another podium finish, and potentially the greatest achievement in the program's Commonwealth Games history.

At the last Commonwealth Games in 2022 in Birmingham, the Sunshine Girls defeated both Australia and New Zealand for the first in the same tournament. However, the Jamaicans failed to replicate that success in the final, going down to Australia.
