Strengthening sporting bonds: Jamaica and South Africa sign cooperation agreement
In a significant step towards fostering greater collaboration in the world of sports, Jamaica and the Republic of South Africa have officially inked a Cooperation Agreement.
This agreement, which promises to bolster ties in various critical sports-related domains, was signed by Hon. Olivia Grange, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, and Hon. Nocawe Noncedo Mafu, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture.
The signing ceremony took place at the prestigious ROK Hotel in downtown Kingston on Tuesday, November 21.
A framework for progress
Minister Grange, speaking during the ceremony, highlighted the significance of the cooperation program.
She emphasized that it would pave the way for the development of frameworks aimed at enhancing data collection and mapping within the realm of sports.
Furthermore, Minister Grange underlined its potential to facilitate collaboration in tertiary research, foster joint conferences, and supervision of postgraduate students.
A notable feature of this cooperation entails the shared use of sports facilities and resources in both nations.
Targeting key disciplines
The Cooperation Agreement between Jamaica and South Africa is poised to encompass a wide array of sporting disciplines.
These include athletics, football, rugby, netball, rowing, and cricket, demonstrating a commitment to multifaceted collaboration that spans various aspects of the sporting world.
South African enthusiasm
In response to the signing of the Agreement, Minister Mafu expressed her enthusiasm and gratitude.
She emphasized the eagerness of South Africa to collaborate closely with Jamaica, particularly in areas related to school sports, university sports, and grassroots sports development.
The cooperation represents an opportunity for South Africa to tap into Jamaica’s expertise and experience in these domains.
A journey of mutual learning
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from the Government of South Africa, led by Minister Mafu.
Their presence in Jamaica is part of a one-week study tour aimed at gaining deeper insights into Jamaica’s sports development model.
This visit follows up on political consultations held last year, during which South Africa expressed a keen interest in understanding and learning from Jamaica’s sports initiatives.
Exploring the Jamaican sporting landscape
During their stay, Minister Grange will engage the South African delegation in discussions covering a wide spectrum of Jamaica’s sports landscape.
These discussions will encompass topics such as Jamaica's sports policy framework, national sports organizations, anti-doping measures, facilities management, and sports financing.
The visiting delegation will also have the opportunity to receive enlightening presentations from prominent bodies like the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association and the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association.
Additionally, they will visit institutions including the University of Technology and the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports.
