Saint Lucia's senior men's national football team will begin a new chapter after head coach Stern John officially resigned from his position, ending a three-and-a-half-year tenure that focused on building a stronger culture, developing young talent, and raising the team's regional competitiveness.

The Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) confirmed John's departure on Tuesday, with the former Trinidad and Tobago international releasing a heartfelt farewell message reflecting on a journey that extended far beyond football.

"After three and a half unforgettable years, I have made the difficult decision to step down," John said. "Saint Lucia has become much more than a place where I coached football. It is a country that welcomed me, challenged me, and gave me the privilege of working with an incredible group of players, staff, administrators, and supporters who share a genuine passion for the game."

Building more than a team

When John accepted the role in 2022, he arrived with a clear mission, to establish a national program rooted in discipline, professionalism, belief, and sustainable development.

During his leadership, Saint Lucia recorded several notable victories while introducing promising young players into the senior setup and strengthening the team's ability to compete across the Caribbean.

Reflecting on that progress, John expressed confidence that the groundwork has been laid for future success.

"I leave with pride in the progress made and with confidence that the foundation now in place can support continued growth in the years ahead."

Heartfelt message to his players

John reserved some of his warmest words for the players who evolved under his guidance, describing their personal and footballing development as one of the most rewarding aspects of his coaching career.

"Watching many of you grow as footballers, and more importantly as young men, has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey," he said. "Continue believing in yourselves, continue demanding excellence from one another, and never lose sight of what is possible for Saint Lucian football. The future belongs to you."

Gratitude for fans and football family

The former Columbus Crew and Birmingham City striker also thanked the Saint Lucian supporters, whose unwavering passion, he said, inspired the team through both triumphs and setbacks.

"Whether you supported us from the stands, followed us from afar, celebrated our victories, or challenged us to be better after difficult moments, your passion never went unnoticed. Football belongs to the people, and your belief in the team has always been a source of motivation."

John also acknowledged SLFA President Lyndon Cooper, the Executive Committee, and every member of his coaching staff for their support throughout his tenure, while pledging to assist with a seamless transition.

New era beckons

Although stepping away from the touchline, John made it clear that his connection to Saint Lucia football remains strong.

"Although my chapter as Head Coach has come to an end, my respect and affection for Saint Lucia will not," he concluded. "I will always remain a supporter of Saint Lucia football, and I look forward to watching the players and the country achieve even greater success."

The SLFA is now expected to begin its search for a successor, with no interim coach or recruitment timetable announced as yet.
