The government of St. Lucia is making significant strides toward creating a fairer job market by setting up a new minimum wage.

This move is spearheaded by Prime Minister Pierre and his team, aimed at boosting the living standards of the working-class population in the country.

Establishing a minimum and equal wages commission

In an effort to address income disparities, a new Minimum and Equal Wages Commission was formed in 2022.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Pierre, the commission collaborated with local employers and labor unions through extensive consultations to establish a suitable minimum wage rate.

Setting a historic minimum wage

For the first time, St. Lucian workers are set to receive a legislatively mandated minimum wage. Employees will be guaranteed a minimum monthly wage of $1,126, translating to $52 daily or $6.50 per hour.

This policy is expected to benefit nearly 13,000 individuals by enhancing their earnings.

Strategic policies to elevate living standards

The introduction of the minimum wage is just the beginning of a series of policy measures aimed at reducing poverty and strengthening the workforce.

These initiatives are designed to ensure that all citizens of St. Lucia can achieve a dignified standard of living.

Seeking public input before legislation

Prior to the official enactment of the Minimum and Living Wage Bill on August 1, 2024, the government is reaching out to gather input from the public.
