CASTRIES, St. Lucia – Julien Alfred, St Lucia’s Olympic champion, became an instant millionaire on Friday, receiving a monumental EC$1 million from the Government in recognition of her outstanding achievements at the Paris Olympics.

The 23-year-old athlete was honored on Julien Alfred Day, a national holiday dedicated to her, after she made history by winning gold in the women’s 100 meters and silver in the 200 meters, becoming the first St Lucian to claim gold at this prestigious event.

The momentous occasion took place during a special concert at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, where Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced plans to rename a section of the Millennium Highway in Alfred’s honor. Additionally, a monument will be erected at the roundabout along that stretch of road to commemorate her remarkable accomplishments.

A fitting tribute

In a fitting tribute to her national record time of 10.72 seconds in the 100 meters, Alfred will also receive a parcel of land measuring 10,720 square feet. The Government plans to design a stamp in her honor, alongside the release of exercise books featuring her photo to inspire future generations.

The celebrations were further enriched by generous donations from several corporate sponsors. M&C and Massy Stores each contributed $30,000, while Unicomer pledged $30,000 worth of gym equipment. Chreiki & Sons promised $50,000, Landings committed $10,000 per annum, and 758 Adventures awarded her $25,000. On Thursday, the St Lucia Olympic Committee also honored her with a grant of $75,000.

The concert concluded a week filled with festivities, including a six-hour motorcade, two school rallies, a flotilla, a cocktail reception, and the unveiling of a mural at Ciceron RC Primary, Alfred’s alma mater. These celebrations highlighted not only her athletic prowess but also her role as a source of pride and inspiration for the nation.
