The revised dates were confirmed at International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings in Dubai last week. The ICC had previously indicated that the tournament would be played between February 22 and March 23.

Timing could benefit West Indies

The scheduling is significant because the SA20 is due to conclude on February 21, while the IPL is expected to begin toward the end of March.

The 2027 SA20 is scheduled to run from January 17 through February 21, while a previously shared window with IPL franchises placed the 2027 IPL season between March 14 and May 30.

With the qualifiers occupying the period between the two major franchise competitions, West Indies should have greater scope to select players who are otherwise committed to those leagues.

Ireland will be the other Full Member nation in the qualifying tournament, having secured its place based on the ICC ODI rankings as of September 30.

Four World Cup places at stake

The qualifying tournament will determine four remaining places in the 2027 World Cup.

Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified automatically, along with the next eight teams in the ODI rankings: India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

That leaves the 10 participating teams competing for four places.

The qualifier winner will advance directly to the World Cup's group stage.

The three other qualifiers will have another hurdle to clear, entering a three-match Super Series at the start of the World Cup. The Super Series will be played in Namibia, with its winner advancing to the main group stage.

Qualification field still taking shape

Four places in the qualifier have been allocated to the leading teams from World Cricket League Division 2. Scotland, the United States, the Netherlands, and Oman currently occupy those positions.

The remaining four spots will come from a World Cup qualifier playoff scheduled for December 1-22 at a venue yet to be announced.

The playoff field will consist of the bottom four teams in WCL 2 and the top four sides from the Challenge League.

At present, Namibia, Canada, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates occupy the bottom four places in WCL 2, while Italy, Uganda, Jersey, and Kuwait are the leading Challenge League teams.

Namibia have another route

Namibia's position is particularly intriguing because the co-hosts could qualify for the 10-team tournament through WCL 2 and avoid the playoff altogether.

They will need to defeat the United States and UAE twice each in matches beginning October 3, while also requiring favorable results involving Oman, Nepal, and Canada.

If Namibia successfully navigates that route, their place in the qualifier would be secured without having to rely on the December playoff.

The final composition of the 10-team field will therefore become clearer over the coming months, but the destination and window are now established: Southern Africa will provide the stage for the final battle for four places at the 2027 World Cup.
