Sister Nancy headed to Spain to perform 'Bam Bam' live for World Cup celebrations

When Spain's national football team, including players Lamine Yamal and Rodrigo Hernández, rolled through Madrid on an open-top bus on Monday, the city didn't wait to celebrate. A day earlier, La Roja (Spanish for "The Red One," the nickname of Spain's national football team) had beaten Argentina in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

By the time the winning team reached the Cibeles Fountain — Madrid's traditional home for championship parties — crowds estimated at nearly two million people packed the plaza, while millions more watched live on television as the trophy was held aloft above them. The historic World Cup celebration was attended by Spanish dignitaries, government officials and sporting executives, including Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Rafael Louzán, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The team was also received by the Spanish royal family, including King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía.

Blasting from speakers above the sea of fans was a song written more than four decades ago, half a world away, by Jamaican DJ Sister Nancy.

On Sunday, dancehall pioneer Sister Nancy heads to Madrid, Spain, to perform her hit song "Bam Bam" live as part of another celebration honoring the Spanish national football team's 2026 FIFA World Cup victory.

"It's a performance for Bam Bam. That's all they want," Sister Nancy said of the booking, noting that the promoter behind the show is connected to Hugel, the Spanish producer whose EDM remix of her song has become a fixture across Europe. Hugel's EDM remix, released in November 2025, has gone gold in France and Greece. It is a staple on Spanish dance floors and surged into the Top 40 on the Spanish iTunes charts.

"Even in Australia, they have it too. They play it all the time," Nancy told Caribbean National Weekly.

Spain, she added, is hardly new territory — she has toured Madrid and Barcelona regularly for years and has built a substantial youth following there.

"Bam Bam" has spent decades finding new homes outside the music industry. It became the name of a rum brand in Australia and New Zealand after Husk Distillery's head distiller had the song on repeat while developing the spirit's recipe in 2017 and named it in tribute. It airs regularly on television in Indonesia. Musically, it may be the most sampled reggae song ever made, built on the "Stalag" riddim and pulled into more than a hundred other tracks despite barely registering as a hit in Jamaica when it was released in 1982 on her debut album, "One, Two."

The list of artists who've sampled "Bam Bam" is a cross-section of modern hip-hop and pop. Jay-Z sampled it on "Bam" with Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and flew her to Jamaica for the video, an experience he has called one of his favorite sample collaborations. Kanye West built "Famous" around her voice, with Rihanna and Swizz Beatz on the track. Beyoncé sampled it for "Hold Up (Homecoming Live)" and, according to the producer of Jay-Z's "4:44," was the one who pushed her husband to finish "Bam" in the first place.

Recognition hasn't always come with compensation — Sister Nancy spent years fighting for royalties on the song she nearly left off her own album. At this point, though, she's settled into gratitude.

"I just have to live and flourish," she shared. "Things are manifesting. I just have to call it a blessing and go through with it. Everybody gets a second chance, and I get a second chance. And it's just wonderful."

The Spain trip is only one stop in an unusually packed stretch. Just days after returning from Spain, Sister Nancy heads to Eastside Park in Paterson, New Jersey, to headline the Bill McKoy Foundation's 10th Annual Jamaica Day Celebration on Aug. 1-2, where Mayor André Sayegh will present her with the Key to the City. She'll share the bill with Minister Marion Hall (formerly Lady Saw), Grammy-nominated Lila Iké and pioneering deejay Lady G — a lineup foundation founder Bill McKoy says spans "every generation and every part of our culture" in Jamaican music.

"We are deeply honored to have Sister Nancy at Jamaica Day this year," McKoy said, "as we celebrate her incredible achievements."

For an artist now in her 60s and still maintaining a touring schedule many performers half her age would find exhausting, it's a fitting stretch: a song born in Kingston in 1982 filling a plaza in Madrid in front of nearly two million people, before the woman who made it travels to Spain to perform it herself — and then returns home to be handed the keys to a city that has claimed her as its own.

"I have to count my blessings," Sister Nancy exclaimed. "Since 1976, I've been doing this... Now that I'm 60 years old, I just have to live and fight and flourish and gain."
